THE ROLE:

We’re bringing Northern Monk to York—and we’re looking for a General Manager to lead the charge. This is a unique opportunity to launch and lead a brand-new venue, building a team and a culture that reflects our values from day one. The General Manager is a pivotal role at Northern Monk, they’d be responsible for the overall success and smooth running of our brand-new bar in York. This is more than just managing a venue—it’s about building something from the ground up, shaping the guest experience, and leading a passionate team in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

You’ll take full ownership of the site, ensuring every part of the operation runs efficiently—from team development and shift leadership to stock, reporting, and hitting commercial targets. But more than that, you’ll bring the Northern Monk ethos to life in a new city, creating a space where quality, inclusivity, and community come together.

You’ll be a confident, people-focused leader who sets the tone for excellent service, fosters a positive team culture, and isn’t afraid to get stuck in on a busy night. With the support of the wider hospitality and HQ team, you’ll play a key role in launching our York venue and making it a much-loved part of the local scene.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Leadership and Team Management:

o Lead, manage, and motivate a team of employees, providing support, training, and development wherever possible.

o Work closely with the People/HR team on staff training, quarterly reviews, recruitment, and other employee matters to ensure your team is engaged and has opportunities for continuous development.

o Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, ensuring the team is engaged.

o Ensure a safe premises and work environment for customers and the team.

· Operational Excellence:

o Ensure that the venue operates smoothly and efficiently on a day-to-day basis.

o Maintain high standards of service, cleanliness, and venue maintenance.

o Oversee stock control and allocation, including stock reports and GP targets.

o Manage cash procedures, financial documents, and venue administration.

o Ensure adherence to Health & Safety regulations and Licensing Objectives and policies.

o Responsibility for all aspects of site security.

o Assist with all other aspects of the business when required.

· Financial Management:

o Responsible for developing, tracking, and achieving the venue's P&L.

o Work with the Finance team to ensure invoicing & financial information is recorded promptly and accurately, and responsible for cash procedures and required financial documents to ensure a timely & accurate P&L result.

o With support from others in the business, set performance measures to track performance.

· Customer Experience:

o Ensure the venue delivers the best possible customer experiences.

o Continuously develop customer experience and standards of service.

o Monitor customer feedback and satisfaction and ensure responses are provided promptly and professionally.

o Proactively drive brand awareness and customer footfall through unique events & beer experiences, working alongside the Bar Operations Manager or relevant teams.

· Business Development:

o Seek to develop relationships with both customers and local businesses, in line with company standards and practices.

o Develop new and current relationships with food vendors in line with the venue's food model.

o Using this as an opportunity to drive trade and create new customer experiences.

o Working alongside the Events Manager/wider Management team, maximize revenue potential and customer experience through private events and bookings.

o Monitor and respond to any issues of damage, fire, or complaint, ensuring to report to Head Office when appropriate.

ABOUT YOU:

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

· Highly organized and capable of managing multiple priorities.

· A good awareness and knowledge of the UK craft beer industry.

· Someone who can operate professionally and strategically with an excellent understanding of the hospitality industry.
